

New Curriculum
Counseling Plus, Inc. (CPI) has implemented a new curriculum supported by evidence-based practices. This new curriculum is based on DiClemente’s Stages of Change approach. CPI translated the new curriculum into Spanish. The emphasis is on client participation by doing exercises and activities during the group sessions. All our counselors are following this new curriculum and report good feedback from clients.
CPI Contributes to Scholarship Fund
This year, CPI has contributed $2,000.00 to the scholarship fund of the Hispanic Employees Association of Montgomery County Public Schools (HEAMCPS). This fund gives scholarships to high achieving Hispanic high school students for their college expenses. Since its inception, CPI has contributed thousands of dollars to this fund.
CPI Presentation in Istanbul
Dr. Eugenio Cid, CPI director, attended the International Congress of Counseling (Istanbul, April 25-27, 2008) and on April 26, 2008 made a presentation on “Issues on Substance Abuse Counseling Hispanic Immigrants in the United States”. This Congress took place at Bahcesehir University of Istanbul under the slogan “Counseling in International Perspective: Global Demands and Local Needs”. It was sponsored by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) International. Dr. Cid’s presentation reflected his experience at CPI in providing substance abuse counseling to Hispanic clients during the past 17 years.
CPI Certification Renewed
Last October, the State of Maryland Office of Care Quality conducted an inspection of CPI program and renewed our certification for two years. The inspector found the program in total compliance with COMAR.
Montgomery County Excellent Report on CPI
In March of 2008, the Program Monitoring Unit (PMU) of Montgomery County conducted its annual review of CPI program. As a result of this review, the monitor wrote a 64-page report in which CPI has a score of 96/100 of compliance regarding its service contract with the County.
Hispanic Women’s Group
Recently, a group of Hispanic women, sponsored by Prince George’s County, completed their program at CPI. All of them participated in group sessions and they also received individual counseling. The group was a smashing success. CPI is in the process of organizing another Women’s Group.
Prince George’s County Renews CPI Contract
The Health Department of Prince George’s County has renewed a contract with CPI to provide substance abuse services to the County Hispanic population. CPI has been working with P.G. Hispanic community for the past six years in close cooperation with P.G. County Division of Addictions.
Chess for Success
During the past several years, CPI has sponsored our part-time counselor Fernando Moreno, LCADC, for a grant from Montgomery County “Under 21 Activity Fund.” This grant has allowed Mr. Moreno to organize his successful program “Chess for Success”, a substance abuse prevention initiative that helps children and adolescents make appropriate choices in life.
