What Is This Service?
Individual substance use counseling is a form of one-on-one therapy where a licensed clinician works with an individual to address their relationship with alcohol or drugs. Unlike group programs or time-limited education courses, individual counseling is personalized — the sessions focus on your specific patterns, triggers, goals, and challenges.
Counseling sessions may address understanding substance use patterns, identifying triggers, developing coping strategies, building relapse prevention skills, improving decision-making, and addressing underlying factors such as stress, anxiety, depression, or trauma that may contribute to substance use. The pace and focus are tailored to your needs.
Counseling Plus Inc. provides individual substance use counseling with licensed clinicians who specialize in substance use treatment. Our approach is compassionate, non-judgmental, and grounded in evidence-based practices. Sessions are available in English and Spanish, virtually or in person.
Who Needs This Service?
Individual substance use counseling may be right for you if you are concerned about your alcohol or drug use and want professional support to make changes. You don't need to have a severe problem to benefit from counseling — many people seek counseling proactively to address patterns before they escalate.
You may also be referred to individual counseling after completing a substance use evaluation or education program. If an evaluation recommends ongoing counseling, or if you've completed a 12, 16, or 26-hour program and want continued support, individual counseling provides a space to deepen your understanding and maintain positive changes.
Some individuals are required to complete counseling as part of court orders, probation conditions, or treatment plans. Whether you're seeking counseling voluntarily or because it's required, our clinicians provide the same compassionate, professional care to every client.
How the Process Works
Counseling begins with an initial appointment where you and your clinician discuss your history, your goals, and what you hope to achieve through counseling. This first session helps your clinician understand your situation and develop a personalized approach.
Subsequent sessions focus on your specific needs and goals. Your clinician may use evidence-based approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, or relapse prevention strategies. Sessions are collaborative — you and your clinician work together to identify patterns, develop skills, and make progress.
The frequency and duration of counseling depend on your individual needs. Some clients attend weekly sessions, others biweekly. Your clinician will work with you to determine the right schedule. Sessions are typically 50 minutes and can be conducted in person or virtually.
How Long Does It Take?
Individual counseling sessions are typically 50 minutes long. The number of sessions depends on your individual needs — some clients attend for a few months, others for longer.
Your clinician will work with you to determine the appropriate frequency and duration of counseling. Progress is reviewed regularly to ensure counseling remains focused and effective.
If you are attending counseling as part of a court order or probation condition, the required number of sessions will be specified in your order. We provide documentation of attendance and progress for your referring party.
Who Accepts It?
Our individual substance use counseling is accepted by Maryland courts, probation offices, the MVA, and attorneys when counseling is required as part of legal proceedings. Our clinicians are licensed and our documentation meets court and probation standards.
If you are attending counseling as part of a court order or probation condition, we provide attendance records, progress reports, and completion documentation directly to your referring party at no additional cost.
Counseling is also appropriate for individuals who are self-referred and not involved with the legal system. Our services are confidential and available to anyone seeking support with substance use concerns.
