What Is This Service?

Medication management is the ongoing process of monitoring and adjusting psychiatric medication under the supervision of a licensed psychiatric provider. It includes regular appointments to assess how the medication is working, adjust dosages if needed, monitor for side effects, and make changes to the treatment plan as necessary.

Effective medication management is not just about prescribing — it's about ongoing collaboration between the patient and the provider to find the right medication, the right dosage, and the right treatment approach. Regular monitoring ensures the medication remains effective and side effects are managed.

Counseling Plus Inc. provides medication management with licensed psychiatric providers who specialize in mental health medication. Our approach is collaborative, patient-centered, and focused on finding the treatment that works best for each individual. Available in English and Spanish, virtually or in person.

Who Needs This Service?

You may need medication management if you are currently taking psychiatric medication and need ongoing monitoring, if you've recently started a new medication and need dosage adjustments, or if you're experiencing side effects and need your treatment plan modified.

Medication management is also for individuals who have completed a psychiatric evaluation and are beginning medication for the first time. The initial phase of medication management involves close monitoring as the provider determines the right dosage and assesses how the medication is working.'

If you've been taking the same psychiatric medication for a long time and want to reassess, or if you're considering discontinuing medication and need professional guidance, medication management appointments provide the oversight and support you need.

Signs You May Need This Service

  • You're currently taking psychiatric medication and need monitoring

  • You're experiencing side effects from your medication

  • You need dosage adjustments

  • Your primary care provider recommended a psychiatric specialist

  • Your medication doesn't seem to be working as well as it should

  • You recently started a new psychiatric medication

  • You want to discuss changing or discontinuing medication

How the Process Works

Medication management begins with a psychiatric evaluation if you haven't already completed one. If you have, we'll review your current medications and treatment history during your first appointment.

During each medication management appointment, your psychiatric provider will ask how you're feeling, whether the medication is helping, and if you're experiencing any side effects. They may adjust dosages, change medications, or recommend additional treatments based on your progress.

Appointments are typically scheduled every 2 to 4 weeks initially, then less frequently as your treatment stabilizes. Virtual appointments are available for ongoing monitoring, which is convenient for clients with busy schedules or transportation challenges.

How Long Does It Take?

Medication management appointments are typically 20 to 30 minutes. During the initial phase, appointments are usually scheduled every 2 to 4 weeks.

As your treatment stabilizes, appointments may be scheduled every 1 to 3 months. The frequency depends on your individual needs and how your medication is working.

We offer virtual medication management appointments throughout Maryland, which means you can attend follow-up appointments from the comfort of your home.

Who Accepts It?

Our mental health evaluations are conducted by licensed clinicians and are accepted by Maryland courts, employers, schools, licensing boards, and healthcare providers. Our reports meet clinical and legal standards for documentation.

With your authorization, we can send the evaluation report directly to your attorney, employer, school, probation officer, or healthcare provider. All documentation is provided at no additional administrative cost.

If you need the evaluation for a specific purpose — such as a court requirement, school accommodation, or employment evaluation — we recommend confirming what documentation format the requesting party needs so we can ensure the report meets their requirements.

What Happens After Your Appointment?

Our medication management services are provided by licensed psychiatric providers and meet all clinical standards for psychiatric medication monitoring. Treatment plans can be coordinated with your therapist and primary care provider with your authorization.

If medication management is related to a court order, employment requirement, or other referral, we can provide documentation for the referring party at no additional administrative cost.

We coordinate care with your therapist, primary care provider, or other treating professionals when appropriate to ensure integrated, comprehensive treatment.
