What Is This Service?

A psychiatric evaluation is a medical assessment conducted by a licensed psychiatric provider — a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner — to diagnose mental health conditions and determine whether medication may be an appropriate part of treatment. Unlike a therapy evaluation, a psychiatric evaluation focuses on the medical and neurobiological aspects of mental health.

During the evaluation, the psychiatric provider conducts a comprehensive clinical interview covering your symptoms, medical history, psychiatric history, family history, and any medications you are currently taking. The assessment may include discussion of how your symptoms affect your daily functioning and whether medication could help.]

Counseling Plus Inc. provides psychiatric evaluations with licensed psychiatric providers who specialize in mental health medication management. Our evaluations are thorough, compassionate, and focused on finding the right treatment approach for each individual. Available in English and Spanish, virtually or in person.

Who Needs This Service?

You may need a psychiatric evaluation if you are experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition — such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, or other psychiatric concerns — and want to explore whether medication could be part of your treatment. A psychiatric evaluation is the first step toward medication management.

Psychiatric evaluations are also appropriate for individuals who are currently taking psychiatric medication and want a re-evaluation, individuals who have tried therapy alone and need additional support, or individuals who have been referred by their therapist for medication consultation.

Some individuals seek psychiatric evaluations because their primary care provider recommended a specialist assessment, or because they want a comprehensive evaluation before starting any medication. Whatever the reason, our psychiatric providers approach every evaluation with expertise and compassion.

Signs You May Need This Service

  • Symptoms of anxiety, depression, or mood instability that may benefit from medication

  • Current psychiatric medication isn't working effectively

  • Your primary care provider recommended a psychiatric assessment

  • You need a comprehensive psychiatric assessment for treatment planning

  • Your therapist recommended a medication consultation

  • You want to explore whether medication could help your symptoms

  • You've been diagnosed with a condition that may require medication

How the Process Works

The evaluation begins with scheduling an appointment with one of our licensed psychiatric providers. The session — which can be conducted in person or virtually — typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes and involves a comprehensive clinical interview.

Your psychiatric provider will ask about your symptoms, medical and psychiatric history, family history, current medications, and how your symptoms affect your daily life. They may use standardized assessment tools to provide objective data. The evaluation is thorough, professional, and conducted in a supportive environment.

After the evaluation, the psychiatric provider will discuss their findings with you, including any diagnoses and treatment recommendations. If medication is recommended, they will discuss the options, potential benefits and side effects, and a treatment plan. If medication is prescribed, follow-up appointments will be scheduled for monitoring.

How Long Does It Take?

A psychiatric evaluation typically takes 60 to 90 minutes to complete in a single session. Follow-up medication management appointments are usually 20 to 30 minutes.

If medication is prescribed, ongoing monitoring appointments are typically scheduled every 2 to 4 weeks initially, then less frequently as your treatment stabilizes.

We offer virtual psychiatric evaluations for clients throughout Maryland. Follow-up medication management appointments can also be conducted virtually.

Who Accepts It?

Our psychiatric evaluations are conducted by licensed psychiatric providers and meet all clinical standards for mental health assessment and medication management. Reports and treatment plans can be shared with your other healthcare providers with your authorization.

If your evaluation is related to a court order, employment requirement, or other referral, we can provide documentation for the referring party. All documentation is provided at no additional administrative cost.

We coordinate care with your therapist, primary care provider, or other treating professionals when appropriate, with your authorization, to ensure integrated treatment.

What Happens After Your Appointment?

After your psychiatric evaluation, the provider will discuss their findings with you, including any diagnoses and treatment recommendations. If medication is recommended, they will explain the options and work with you to develop a treatment plan.

If medication is prescribed, follow-up appointments will be scheduled for monitoring. The provider will assess how the medication is working, adjust dosages if needed, and address any side effects. Ongoing monitoring continues until your treatment is stable.

If you are also seeing a therapist, we can coordinate care with your therapist (with your authorization) to ensure your treatment is integrated and comprehensive.
